I had a blog-break over the weekend. Unplanned - just got caught up in real life. It's funny how the virtual world can take over. I feel better for having my head solely in one place for 48 hours straight!

I don't know if it's a result of being a working parent, but I always expect great things from the weekend. I think I expect much more than two days can possibly deliver.

This weekend we did get around to putting the tree up (went fake in the end, just easier I'm afraid to say). It looks lovely, I'll get the camera out later and post a photo. We played carols, put on extra fairy lights and baked gingerbread.

So...what I didn't get to do this weekend was start my Christmas shopping. Would love to just pop in to Anthropologie and get the lot. I'm sure it will all get done eventually.

Summertime (and the need for new cutlery)

Summer may actually be here. Last night we ate our first dinner outdoors, a regular Summertime treat.

We ate one of my favourite things to cook (because it's easy and tastes good. I'm not sure I can really call it cooking, as most of the ingredients come from a jar).

Cook a big pot of spaghetti.

Drain, and stir through diced, cooked bacon, basil pesto (I used it from the jar - lazy I know), a tin of drained smoked oysters, some chopped semi-sundried tomatoes and some marinated artichoke hearts.

Eat it with a salad to get your vege hit.

Here's to many more Summertime dinners.

(And yes, I have noticed my exceptionally dated cutlery. It was a wedding present but, even so, it must be time for an upgrade. Oh federation green....you should have stayed in the nineties.)

Real or Fake?

Real or fake? Which way to go? I know it's early to be considering this, but I'm thinking of going real this year. I've faked in the past (with a very lovely, tall-but-compact model), but there is something about the smell of a real tree. We've had expeditions in the past to chop our own tree (think dust, sweat...it's always been exceptionally hot when we've done this), which may have put some of us off (i.e. my husband who will be the chopper).

Still, I may spend some time this weekend investigating.

Home Plus Cushions...a giveaway

Bird's fabrics are handprinted using water based dyes, and the company is Australia's first climate neutral business. Very impressive...

I love these living rooms. They are festive without a Christmas decoration in sight. Perhaps it's something to do with the fireplace? Funny how, even though Christmas here will undoubtedly be hot, spent somewhere between the beach and the barbeque, a decorated fireplace still says Christmas to me.

Lemonade and Jasmine

My daughter is hooked on the domestic art of making lemonade. She made a huge batch yesterday, and it tastes summery and delicious.

Here's how...

Squeeze 1 cup of lemon juice.

Dissolve 1 cup of caster sugar in 1 cup of water in a saucepan on the stovetop.

Stir the juice into the sugar/water solution.

Add 3-4 cups of cold water and let cool in the fridge.

Serve with iceblocks and drink while relaxing (preferably in a hammock strung between two shady trees)

Last week I went with a dear friend to a pasta making class. If you hail from these parts, you might be interested to know that it was held at Upper Crust, in West Perth, and it was fantastic. The chef was Sophie Budd, who is rather clever with the old pasta machine, and works out at Bleeno's Bistro in the Swan Valley.

We were served wine, got to taste each dish (each one was simple, with truly amazing flavours) and Sophie made it look do-able. Not a bad way to spend the evening.

First item on my Christmas List...a pasta maker.

Green Update...

Still quietly working away at becoming a little greener. I thought it was time to let you know of my progress.

I am now (plastic) bagless. The first thing I did was to buy myself a nifty little roll-up bag that fits into my everyday bag. The second thing I did was remember to use it. I have knocked back offers of plastic all over the city and am feeling a little virtuous.

I also bought the supermarket green bags - a good investment. I am a little bit in love with them as they stack brilliantly in the trolley and don't break between the car boot and the kitchen.

For the love of Jane...

Is it wrong to love a place so much based on its connection to one of my favourite authors? Although my family is English, I have absolutely no connection to Bath, yet it is one of my all-time favourite places. Perhaps it was inspired by my love of Jane Austen.

I discovered Jane at a young age, and risked social suicide as a teenager by carrying not just a small paperback novel in my schoolbag, but the whole hardback collected works. (Oh dear!)

On a visit to Bath I ditched my husband and children, and spent two happy hours at the Jane Austen Centre (again...oh dear!)

Jane has been with me for over half my life. Sadly, I have neglected her recently. Real life has got in the way of parties with the militia, walks in the countryside and visits to Bath.

I think this weekend it is time to dust off my collected works and catch up with old friends.

100 steps... and the first of the Springtime Face Lift

Every weekend begins for us at our local patisserie. It is a ritual that has become part of the fabric of our life. Our patisserie is simple in its magnificence. No pretension, no fuss, just pastries that speak for themselves. Yesterday, when I walked there to buy this Frangipani Tart for afternoon tea, I happily discovered it is 100 steps from my front porch to the local patisserie. (And no, I am not suffering from a compulsion to count my steps, I was just curious...truly)

The Springtime Face Lift has begun. Now I know that it is almost cheating to start with the dining table, but I'm easing myself into it (i.e. being lazy).

Vase via Trilogy, one of my favourite places. It was a housewarming gift that has been tucked away in a cupboard for a while.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to find Hooked on Houses. It was one of those happy accidents - from one blog to the next and then...voila. If you haven't already been there (and you probably have - I'm possibly the last person to discover it), it's written by Julia, who clearly loves all things home.

Julia's most recent post talks about decorating her home for the change of season. She has some really simple suggestions and lovely pics of her latest Autumnal additions.

Julia...you have inspired me. I feel a project coming on (insert eye-rolls and groans from my family here). I'm wondering if it's possible to give my home a Springtime face lift, southern hemisphere style. And the challenge, with sustainability and my budget in mind, will be to give this little house a lift using what I already have, or what I can pick-up second hand. Now I haven't really got a plan, and there are certain constraints with the colour scheme (for example I don't think the obvious Springtime pink-and-green combination will work with my red and white striped wing-back chair), but I'm prepared to give it a go. Yellow...are you brave enough?

Using yellow in your home (or wearing it for that matter) requires a certain amount of bravery mixed with a pretty hefty dose of confidence. These homes use just a drop with great effect. Imagine starting your day in a sunshine-yellow bathroom...almost better than coffee.

I love this sunny yellow highlight in the kitchen. It's got a little bit of devil-may-care about it.

And I could absolutely live with this kitchen- it's so cheery.

Love the yellow, white and grey combo too.

Perhaps yellow accessories are a good place to start.

Wherever you are, I hope the sun shines, in one form or another, on your home.

Sunday is a great day to bake. There is something so grounding about baking - it says 'home' like nothing else can.

My favourite chocolate cake recipe is from Donna Hay's Simple Essentials - Chocolate. It was given to me as a housewarming present when we first moved here. I just love Donna Hay. Every one of her recipes that I have used has worked brilliantly (and she appears to have a fantastically dry sense of humour - I've heard her speak on the radio a few times).

If you haven't already visited Donna's website take a look, so many lovely things to bake.

Her recipe for this Basic Chocolate Cake is below.

Beat 375g of softened butter and one and a half cups of brown sugar in an electric mixer for 8-10 minutes. Gradually add 3 eggs and beat well. Fold through 2 cups plain (all-purpose) flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and two thirds of a cup of cocoa. (Donna says to sift flour and cocoa - twice for the cocoa). Stir in three quarters of a cup of milk and bake at 160 degrees C in a lined 22cm round cake tin for one hour and ten minutes. Cool in the tin for ten minutes, and then turn out onto a wire rack.

I was feeling too lazy to ice the cake, so I asked my lovely daughter to add the finishing touches. I think she did a beautiful job.

To mix or not to mix?

I am a fence-sitter when it comes to dining chairs. Should they match, or should they be mixed? I love these two pictures above, of tables with mismatched chairs. I imagine each chair has its own story to tell, and if sourced from second hand stores and flea markets, they are easy on the planet.

These chairs are mixed, but are so closely related, either by design or materials, that they may as well match. When I say I'm a fence-sitter, it's because in my home 6 of my 8 chairs match, with the ones at either end of the table being different (but matching each other). None of them match the table. Confused?

I'd love to be brave enough to go for the first look.

I have an unexplained attachment to lighthouses. I'm sure the realities of lighthouse living are far from my romantic notion of blustery days eating fish sandwiches (which I'm sure are not anywhere near as tasty as Enid Blyton made us believe). A license to snoop

I have a love/hate relationship with realestate.com . I love that I can be as nosy as I like, snooping around other people's homes unnoticed, questioning their decorating decisions, marvelling at their renovations. I hate that I can lose hours doing this. I also hate that every so often I have a grass-is-always-greener moment and consider moving house. The fact is, I don't want to move house. I don't want to deal with real estate agents, banks and removal companies. But, there it is, realestate.com, just a click away.

Once upon a time, if you wanted to snoop around other people's homes, you had to either peer through windows looking decidedly dubious, or get out and about to open homes. This required, at the very least, constant monitoring of the newspaper for new listings in the real estate pages. Now I can see more in ten minutes online than I could ever see in a whole Saturday of open homes.

I'm sure I'm not the only one guilty of doing this, but hey, I don't think I'm doing any harm. These home owners don't know how judgmental I'm being ("They want how much? For that"). They don't know that I'm questioning their decision to paint yet another feature wall. And oh... it is so much fun.

What's a nice girl like me doing skulking around inner city alleyways?

That's where I found myself this morning, taking some shots for my brother-in-law's band to use on their demo CD.

The alley had a lot of little balconies overlooking it, and I wondered if these came off gorgeous inner city warehouses. While it's lovely in the city on a quiet Sunday morning, I'm not sure if I'd want to live inner city all the time. I certainly could give warehouse living a go though.

Trusting your own style

I sometimes feel we are bombarded with so many beautiful images of homes, that it can be hard to trust your own style. Ironic, I know, as I am the first to lap up these images on a daily basis. The images we see are all so beautiful, and so varied. There are the gorgeous character homes, complete with open plan extensions and french doors leading to a beautiful garden. There are the slightly industrialised warehouse apartments, with soaringly high ceilings and exposed brickwork. There are the minimalist homes, concrete-floored, sparsely-furnished but perhaps appealing for their sense of space and commitment to a style. All so different, but all with their own aesthetically pleasing merits.

So, where does that leave you when it comes to your own style? Of course it's fluid, it changes (thank goodness) over time. But you have to be brave when you are bombarded with so many magnificent images. I was looking around my home while eating breakfast yesterday, and wondering if the cheep-and-cheerful print of my favourite Robert Doisneau image, which was given to me nearly twenty years ago (in a frame typical of its era) should go? Or the Venetian mask that hangs in my living room (hey... it works ok), or the countless jugs picked up over the years in op shops.

When I look around my home, there is such a mish-mash of things, that I have to fall back on William Morris's quote. We've all heard it countless times. "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." All the things that don't quite fit a style in my home are there, because, I believe them to be beautiful or useful. I'd like to add to this quote though ("How arrogant", I hear you shout, "Adding to William Morris's quote indeed!") The things in your home should tell a story. They should speak of the journey that brought you to this point in time. The things that I was questioning over breakfast yesterday all contribute to our family's story. The Robert Doisneau print, seemingly cheap looking now, was not twenty years ago, and six good-but-broke student friends chipped in to buy it for me. The mask was picked up in Venice when we ventured to Europe for the first time with our children, trecking from town to town with far too much luggage in tow. The green Denby jug and sugar bowl were, surprisingly, picked up in an op shop in a small coastal town in New Zealand (where my husband and I lived for a year, pre-children). Surprising because it was a perfect match to one I'd picked up in Australia about two years before.

I'm sure I can hear you gasping in horror at the tragic home-decor scene I've just described. But, for some reason, it seems to work. I guess all of these things are linked by their stories (if not by aesthetics), and I think that may just be what makes a home.

Oh, the charm of luggage. Luggage is ever-so romantic. It goes on journeys and comes in a matching set and, of course, should never be confused with baggage (I'm sure it would be highly offended).

Luggage begs to be taken, preferably via steam train, to the far corners of the earth. Luggage requires a traveling coat, a hat and a handsome companion.

I had forgotten that I own an old suitcase. It's been sitting, quite sadly, on the top of my wardrobe, for far too long.

I have an almost superhuman ability to pigeonhole things in the back of my mind. Convenient, some would say. Others (and I know who you are) would say dysfunctional. However, when spring cleaning recently in that dark recess of my mind I discovered an awful lot of concern/uncertainty about the issues surrounding sustainability. For a long time now I have been filing the stuff that I should be doing away, promising myself I'll get to it soon. I'm not sure why this is. Is it the fear that cleaning with vinegar will have my home smelling like a fish and chip shop? Perhaps the concern that one day I might just need that plastic bag that I refused? Maybe the reluctance to stop spending happy times shopping for new and gorgeous things for my home?
So, after extracting myself from the discomfort of these thoughts, I sat myself down with a cup of tea and started to do some research. Now I realise that I am a latecomer to sustainable living, and don't expect me to go all hippy on you overnight. However, I am aiming to set myself some small-but-achievable goals. The first is to give up plastic bags (is there a patch for that?) The second goal is to know more about the items I buy. The third (and I think I can only cope with three for now) is to reuse more i.e. to find things that have already been produced and reinvent, reframe etc. Doesn't sound so hard, does it?
I'm not sure if three as-yet-unachieved goals allows me to pat myself on the back, but I'm going to anyway. Gotta start somewhere. In the meantime, I have found some lovely places that support some/all of these goals. Pop along and have a look.

I was thinking recently how my decorating style has changed over the years (or perhaps I should say evolved). My first home, a tiny cottage, was decked out with baltic pine furniture with federation green and white accessories. (I'm not sure if federation green is a uniquely Aussie term - for those of you OS, think very dark green). I'm cringing at the thought of this combination, although in my defence, it was the mid nineties.
So, I'm compiling my current list of favourite home decor looks, and I'm planning on looking back at this in a year's time. This time next year I will update/review my list (hopefully I won't gasp in horror at my 2009 taste). So here goes, in no particular order, here are my favourites...

A flea market find

If only my local flea markets looked like this! Nevertheless, I love to spend some time rummaging around there on a Sunday morning. We braved the chilly air today and came home with a dirty- looking glass dome and wooden base (which I think was once home to a clock). We paid the princely sum of $1.50. After washing the glass, sanding and oiling the base, it is now home to some of our ever-increasing shell collection. A very inexpensive ornament, and I rather like the look of it. I'm a happy girl when I have paid so little for something so delightful.

Small House Living - a quiet corner...

I really love the challenges presented by small house living. Wanting to make a space for myself to work on some long-neglected art projects, I have reclaimed our old drop-front desk. Sadly disorganised, it had become a repository for all those things that you just don't know where to put.

Nestled snuggly (let's face it, most things are snug in a terrace house) next to my bed, it is now much more inviting, with lots of useable storage. I have used inexpensive boxes from Ikea, old jam jars and some bowls borrowed from the kitchen. This corner gets quite a bit of sunlight, as it is next to two big sash windows. I'm looking forward to spending many happy hours there.

After two weeks of waiting, I am very excited to let you know that the baby birds have hatched! They are bald and grey, with a beak much too big for their body. We think they are beautiful, and , even though all we have done is watch impatiently, we are very proud. They don't seem to mind at all that their home is in a peg basket. I managed to get these shots while the mother bird was away from the nest (let's face it, we all need a break sometime).

Somewhere near the very top of my wish list is an Eames LCW. I like to think that the LCW is to interior decor what the LBD is to fashion - a must have (a must have which I currently don't have).

Perhaps a little less easy to source, I would also love to get my hands (or should that be legs) on at least one of the plywood leg braces made for the military by Charles and Ray Eames prior to their role as iconic furniture designers. These leg braces are now highly sought after works of art. I'd love to hang a couple of these on my wall - what a great ( if slightly macabre) conversation starter that would be.

While I'm waiting (not-so-patiently) for my Eames chair, I have a DIY project to keep me busy. I recently came across the drawings of the LCW lodged with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, along with the patent number and the date on which it was filed (March 1st 1947). I will be spending a few happy hours finding a frame and mounting the sketches of the LCW. I know exactly where I'm going to hang it. I'll let you know when it's done.

Re-kindling a fabric obsession...

Despite my best intentions to do very little yesterday, I had a small clear-out of my old drop-front desk (I hesitate to call it antique, but it must almost qualify for that title). It was full of the detritus of life - batteries, old padlocks, pens that no longer work and I cannot tell you how many unused keys. Although I'm sure it could bring some kind of bad karma to hold onto unused keys (I'm thinking unopened doors, lost opportunities - you get the picture), I cannot bring myself to throw them away. It is as if one day I'll come across a locked door in my home that I had previously been unaware of, and magically produce the key. Consequently, they are now stored in tiny plastic bags elsewhere.
My intention for this desk is to set it up as a work place for small, but nevertheless important, hand made activities. Any time the creative urge strikes, I am forced to pull apart my wardrobe in an effort to reach the small swatches of fabric stored in the back. Of course, the fabric scissors are missing, and have been used for something unseemly like chopping up a chicken. My aim is to centralise all of these things - glue, card, fabric, ribbon, scissors (of course newly purchased) etc. Think small (very small) studio/workshop.
In the process of sorting, and re-sorting, I came across some beautiful fabric that I had put away for (I hesitate to say a rainy day, but yes, just that). I had forgotten how much I love gorgeous, have-to-run-your-fingers-over-it fabric. And so, I am heading out today to source some more, as I can feel the seeds of ideas beginning to sprout.

If procrastinating were an Olympic Sport, I'd certainly be up for a Bronze, at the very least. Today is a holiday Monday in my corner of the world, and, when faced with a free day, I begin by mulling over all the things that I could do (compare this to a 'proper' work day, when I do all the things I have to do). What I really should do is get a little bit of order into this small space of mine. Cupboards are threatening to overflow, and drawers are struggling to close. This pic above, from Swish and Swanky, inspires me to sort, tidy and re-do. But, I might just start by putting the kettle on....

Delicious Pastries

I am always in favour of quick baking, particularly if the end result is chocolatey-good. This recipe (I think) came from a recent Vogue Entertaining and Travel. I have a bad habit of ripping recipes out of magazines and forgetting where they have come from. If anyone can confirm/set-me-straight on the source I'd very much appreciate it.

But...I digress. I used frozen butter puff pastry for this. Once the pastry has thawed, use a biscuit cutter to cut out circles (the original recipe suggests making them larger by tracing around a saucer). Lay your circles of pastry on a lined tray and place a few squares of chocolate in the centre. Add a top circle of pastry (the same size as the bottom), and pinch the sides together with your fingers. Brush with a little beaten egg, and bake at for about twenty minutes, or until the pastry is golden and puffed. I suggest using the instructions on the pastry pack as a guide for the oven temperature.

These are great eaten straight from the oven, dusted with icing sugar, with a blob of cream on the side. Just watch out for the hot chocolate.

Everything appears to have its place (if only my own shelves were this organised). Worryingly, I suddenly have the urge to go out and buy more cake stands...Did I hear someone say, "obsession"? This is one of my favourite combinations - white with wood. I think the appeal lies in the contrast between the smooth white walls and the texture of the timber. I have to say that, sadly, I'm a little bit tired of the Ghost Chair. Is that sacrilegious? I appreciate the form and innovation - it will always be an icon - but it does seem to be everywhere. Having said that though, they are great in this small space, as they let that glorious sunlight bounce around the room, and allow the eye to travel to the farthest corner. Ironically, they would be perfect in my small space...

I have an unnatural attachment to cake stands, and am running out of reasons to buy more. I have so many that I could never possibly use all of them at once - short of setting up my own cake shop. I love these beautiful Juliska cake stands, gloriously ornate and in danger of outshining any cake put inside. I'm not sure what drives this obsession - possibly a deep-seated, Enid Blyton-type love of afternoon tea and midnight feasts.

We have been living in our home for almost three years, and for some time now I have been thinking of re-painting in a fresh shade of white. The walls are currently a take-it-or-leave-it kind of mushroomy-peach. The colour is lack-luster at best, and doesn't have the decisive quality brought by the combination of timber floors and white walls. I have been put off re-painting a number of times by the height of the eleven foot ceilings and the level of disruption painting will bring. Living in a small home means that we use every room, and having even one out of action causes major upheaval. Still, I am again considering it, spurred on by these gorgeous pics from here.

Last Saturday, as you may recall, I found a bird's nest in my peg basket. There was no bird in there, just an empty nest. So, I took it out, needing to use the pegs. Yesterday, to my surprise, I discovered that a new nest had been built. It is nestled there, tucked away in a corner, with two tiny but glorious eggs inside. I can see the mother bird coming and going, busily making preparations. I admire her persistence and understand her innate need to create a home. And so, she will have the run of my peg basket for as long as she needs, and I'm off to the hardware store to buy some new pegs.

Beach Walking

I love the way coastal living makes you so very aware of the rhythms of nature. At the moment our beach is just recovering from the brutalities of winter - the hard knocks of storms and abrasive winds. The seaweed still hides the odd treasure, but mostly the beach is looking like, it too, is waiting for the new Summer sun to bring back its former glory. Still, it doesn't stop us from walking, ever hopeful, and inevitably ending up in the sea.

Mid-week baking

Every-so-often I lapse into 1950's wife mode, and feel a hefty dose of mother-guilt if my children don't have something home-cooked in their lunchbox. I have a feeling that this matters much more to me than to my children, however, it compels me to don apron and reach for the mixing bowl. During the week I don't have the time to make a leisurely afternoon of it, so I need a recipe that is easy and requires no thought. This apple bread does the trick.

Pour a small tin of pie apple into a bowl (I know I should be suggesting that you lovingly pick, peel and stew your apples, but let's be realistic - it's Wednesday). Next, add two eggs and mix with a fork. Add three quarters of a cup of brown sugar, and then stir through two cups of self-raising flour. Pour this mixture into a lined loaf tin, and bake in a moderate oven for about forty five minutes. Voila...apple bread with a small helping of virtue on the side.

Today is Roald Dahl Day. In honour of one of my favourite children's book authors I felt compelled to make something chocolatey with a 'Wonka-esque' twist. I have been holding onto this recipe for quite some time - a torn out page from an old Vogue Entertaining + Travel.
Begin by melting 300g of white chocolate. Once melted, stir in one teaspoon of salt flakes, two teaspoons of chopped dried rosemary and one tablespoon of dried rose petals (I picked these up from my local market, but VE+T suggests trying Middle Eastern food stores). Once mixed together, pour onto a lined tray, and spread out to about three millimetres thick. Put it into the fridge for about an hour to set, and then break it as haphazardly-as-you-like into shards. The taste is quite remarkable, and I am in love with the beautiful colours. Much-Too-Much Mint

The mint in my garden is suddenly, and quite profoundly, out of control. Needing to cut it back, but not wanting to waste the mint, I have been searching for cold-weather mint recipes. So many mint recipes are for ice-creams and salads, but until Spring arrives with a little more commitment, I am unwilling to travel that road. I love this recipe for Moroccan Mint Tea, and it should prove a warm addition to these rainy Spring days. I am hoping that once my mint recovers from a vigorous cut-back, it will rise again in Summer, ready to provide me with countless opportunities to try fresh, new food and drink recipes. I have always wanted to try a Mint Julep, and it looks so easy to make that I can have it done quicker than you can say, "The Great Gatsby". Roll-on Summer...

A Sunday Project

Wanting a change from my usual 'vase of flowers on the kitchen table' aesthetic, I decided today to make my own version of a terrarium. This glass dome has had many lives, from ornamental displays to covering a plate of cupcakes at a birthday party. The combination of white porcelain, glass and wood is always appealing to me, and I have used it here to create a little bit of spring indoors. It's simple to make, just put potting mix into the bowl, poke in a geranium cutting and surround it with lots of sphagnum moss. Once you have added a little bit of water, pop on the dome. Happy potting.

The Sleepy Hollow Chair resides at my sister's place, where I have just spent the morning. It is not just a piece of furniture, but a story that is part of the fabric of the Hope Family history. Crafted around 1895 by Joseph Hope, it has been part of my brother-in-law's family for four generations. No doubt, countless hours have been spent in comforting contemplation in the crook of The Sleepy Hollow Chair. Its arms are lovingly worn, the right bearing the initials of young Margaret, carved perhaps in a moment of solitary defiance. My own girls have sat in this chair ever since they could climb into it, feet barely dangling over the edge. Isn't it wonderful how furniture can soak up the memories of a family, and tell its stories for generations to come?

I had never considered that an old tarpaulin could be inspiring, but I love the way the blue covers on the yachts contrast with the white, gold and grey. It seems that inspiration can come from anywhere. Perhaps these are colours to consider in your next decorating project?

Small House Living

My own 'good place' is a renovated terrace by the sea. Completely impractical for a family, we fell in love with the high ceilings and the beautiful character features. Small house living comes with its own challenges, but also some lovely benefits. Using each space for more than one purpose has become a necessity. Our living room has a small writer's desk in one corner. On it sit our Mac and a revolving pile of books and papers. I love having a bookcase in the living room too. I regret to say that it holds such classics as Handbag Horoscope (a guide to your year small enough to fit into your handbag-not, sadly an astrological guide to choosing the correct accessories) and Blokes and Sheds. There are, however, enough 'clever looking' books so as to not cause too much shame should anyone care to browse. Notwithstanding the bonus, if undeserved, IQ points books provide, I love the way they add texture, warmth and interest to a room.

The first day of Spring for those of us in this part of the world. Typically, it rained for most of the day. Comments about new life and lambs notwithstanding, the first day of Spring does appear to bring some kind of promise. This is the time of the year when I wish I had planted bulbs, as the only colour in my little courtyard garden comes from the stubbornly pink geraniums. So, as I promise myself I'll plant bulbs next year, I grab my umbrella and head out into Spring.
